Backflow Preventers
Why do I need a backflow preventer?
Like the name implies backflow preventers prevent water from flowing back into a live system. They protect our drinking water from becoming contaminated by negligence or accident.
Do I need to use a backflow preventer?
Any time you are draw water in a construction setting from the live system a backflow preventer is required. This includes filling and flushing new watermain, filling a water truck or tank or using water for cleanup and wash stations.
Is my backflow preventer approved?
As of February 2021 the MECP requires that all backflow preventers used in commissioning new watermain must be a “reduced pressure” (RP) model. These are characterized by their two check valves and a relief valve. Dual check valve assemblies (DVCA) are no longer allowed. Common RP backflows include Watts 009 and 909 models as well as Zurn-Wilkins 975 and 375 models
Does my backflow preventer need to be certified?
The MECP requires that any RP backflow preventer installed for commissioning new watermain must be certified on installation by a licensed Cross-Connection Control Specialist. Should a backflow preventer be moved throughout the day a recertification can be avoided if the device was moved and installed by a certified operator.
